NONPROFIT AIMS TO COMBAT VETERAN HOMELESSNESS WITH TINY HOUSE VILLAGE IN MILWAUKEE

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- To confront the pressing crisis of veteran homelessness, a proposed tiny house village in Milwaukee is aiming to offer a beacon of hope and stability to area vets.

Nonprofit organization Veterans Community Project has embarked on a mission to establish a village of 40 tiny homes in Milwaukee. This initiative seeks to offer stable and dignified housing for veterans without homes, providing a foundation for them to rebuild their lives as a direct response to the growing need for veteran support in the city.

According to VCP, the goal is to reduce the number of homeless veterans through sustainable housing solutions that include a full kitchen and bath, new furniture, appliances, bedding, personal items and utilities. The homes will be free of charge.

The community is planned to be located near 60th and Green Tree Rd. and will include support services to assist veterans transitioning back to independent living. The City of Milwaukee, along with partners like Milwaukee Tool, has pledged support, contributing to the funding alongside donations from several foundations.

The Veterans Community Project touts an 85% success rate of residents transitioning to permanent housing, in cities such as Kansas City, where the project was founded, along with St. Louis, Mo., Longmont, Colo. and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Nov. 7, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson commended the project, stating, "I look forward to the positive impact that VCP and their Milwaukee village will have for our city’s veterans and for our whole community."
